Friends recently returned home after being gone for only two hours to discover their home had flooded.
The City of LA was fixing the sewer line in the street, something happened, and sewage backed-up into the home spewing out of every drain and plumbing fixture.
Naturally the homeowner’s insurance policy covered it, right?
Wrong!
Coverage was denied because the problem originated on the street and not from the insured property. The homeowners suddenly had to pay for lodging (six weeks), renovations (four months), plus a lawyer to sue the city for reimbursement (still working on it).
However, had their homeowner’s policy included “sewer/water back-up” coverage, they would have been covered immediately. Confirm that your policy contains this coverage (insurance companies all handle differently).
