Old Pasadena Walking Tour
Pasadena Heritage

The Old Pasadena South February Walking Tour explores the rich and diverse history of Dayton Street and some of Pasadena’s earliest Black-owned businesses, the first Fire Station, and the Friendship Pasadena Church (previously the Friendship Baptist Church). This narrated and guided tour will also include the story of Mills Place alley, the site of an 1885 fire at a Chinese laundry, which resulted in the expulsion of Pasadena’s Chinese population from the city’s original commercial district.

Without Pasadena Heritage, this National Register Historic District would have been destroyed! Now it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalizations in the country. Let one of our trained docents lead you through the historic neighborhood and reveal its many hidden and unusual architectural details, old alleyways, and historic signs.

The tour is approximately 1.5 hours and covers approximately 1.5 miles.

The Life and Works of Antoni Gaudi
Santa Monica College Community Education
$20
Instructor: Eleanor Schrader

The visionary works of Antoni Gaudí have left an unmistakable imprint upon the architecture of Barcelona. His flamboyant designs carried out during the Spanish Art Nouveau period of Modernisme came to characterize a city and its people through his use of brightly colored tiles and tactile materials, religious metaphors, and structural innovations in his architecture. This lecture will explore the exuberant inventiveness of Gaudí’s work in architectural and interior design in the context of turn-of-century Barcelona.

Rub a Dub Dub: History of the Tub
Eleanor Schrader
$10

Bathing practices over the centuries have taken some interesting twists and turns since ancient times. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Europeans in the Middle Ages took pains to keep themselves clean. But in the subsequent Renaissance period there was a significant abandonment of hygienic practices, likely due to the disease-induced closure of public bathhouses in the 1500s. Join me as we explore bathing customs throughout the ages, complete with illustrations of bath time reveries and humorous practices.

The Art and Architecture of Pompeii
Eleanor Schrader

Buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, Pompeii and neighboring sites around the Bay of Naples have captured the modern imagination of life in ancient Roman cities. Scandal and Redemption: John Singer Sargent
Santa Monica College Community Education
$20
Instructor: Eleanor Schrader
Cosmopolitan, gregarious, and prodigious, Sargent’s fashionable portraits were the most celebrated symbol of his brilliance. He was a master of many different painting styles—classical portraits, Impressionistic, landscapes, watercolors, and murals—and his richly textured pallets reflected his lifelong reverence for Diego Velázquez and Franz Hals. Caught in the cross-fire of controversy on several occasions, he celebrated his passion for art through a breadth of subject matter ranging from portraits of two U.S. Presidents to paintings executed near the front lines during World War I.

The Wearin’ O’ the Green
OLLI at UCLA Extension
$15
Instructor: Eleanor Schrader
As the tradition goes, wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day supposedly makes you invisible to leprechauns. In this course, we explore how artists used green to create symbolism, emotions and socio-political meanings within the context of the period in which they created their works of art. We look at how artists utilized their knowledge of color to portray mood, light, depth and point of view in their creations. We discuss the meaning of green in a variety of paintings to understand the artists’ intention and the stories behind the paintings. To complete our study, we cover the history of St. Patrick’s Day and how the saint and the celebration have been depicted throughout art history.

Gritty City: Ashcan School Artists
California Lutheran University, Fifty and Better
$10
Lecturer: Eleanor Schrader
(Choose to attend online via Zoom or In-Person in Oxnard)
The Ashcan School was an artistic movement known for portraying the grittiness and realism of early twentieth century New York City. In this lecture, we explore the maverick group of artists who worked in this style; including Robert Henri, John Sloan, Everett Shinn, George Bellows. Some used the dirty streets of the city as a backdrop to the portrayal of the working class, while others painted images of working class diversions such as nightclubs, circuses, boxing matches, and trips to the beach. These were not topics considered to be appropriate subjects for high art at the time, and for this reason the historian Holger Cahill coined the term “Ashcan School,” as a tongue-in-cheek reference to other schools of art. Our discussion includes the social-political backdrop in which these artists emerged and their populist views towards the art world.

“The Off Ramp“ Neighborhood Walking Tour
Pasadena Heritage
Development of major transportation routes forever changed the residential landscape of Pasadena, but if one looks closely, remnants of our bungalow past are still present and are explored on this tour. Join us as we walk one of Pasadena’s neighborhoods, shaped in part by the construction of the railroad and freeway, and trace roughly fourteen decades of evolution. It is estimated that the 210 Freeway caused the displacement of over 4,000 residents in Pasadena as it cut a wide path through the middle and northwest portions of the city. The freeway became operational in 1974, three years before the formation of Pasadena Heritage. Despite the demolition of homes and the intrusion of incongruent construction, some of the historic fabric remains.

Downtown Santa Ana Historic Architecture Tour
Preserve Orange County
$20 – members; $25 – non-members
Downtown Santa Ana (DTSA), the county seat since 1889, is probably more reminiscent of a classic downtown than any historic downtown in Orange County. Evidence of an aspiring business district and young county government of the early decades of the twentieth century can still be found in the orthogonal grid of streets and dense blocks of mid-rise buildings in a variety of architectural styles. And to complete the picture, the streetcar will soon be making a comeback!

Old Pasadena Walking Tour – South
Pasadena Heritage
The Old Pasadena Walking Tour South explores the rich and diverse history of Dayton Street and some of Pasadena’s earliest Black-owned businesses, the first Fire Station, and the Friendship Pasadena Church (previously the Friendship Baptist Church).
Now, it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalization in the country. Let one of our trained docents lead you through the historic neighborhood and reveal its many hidden and unusual architectural details, old alleyways, and historic signs.
The tour is approximately 1.5 hours and covers approximately 1.5 miles.

Architecture, Interiors, and Decorative Arts of the Italian Renaissance
UCLA Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
$15
Instructor: Eleanor Schrader
The rebirth of the arts during the Renaissance period gave rise to sumptuous commissions by prosperous families. Archeological excavations of ancient Greece and Rome, financed by merchants, greatly influenced the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance. As Italy became the cultural center of Europe and the cradle of the new ideas of humanism in the Renaissance, wealthy families supported fine and decorative arts in the creation of opulent interiors. We will explore the splendid art, magnificent architecture, and luxurious decorative arts that graced the churches and palazzos of the Italian Renaissance.

The Victorian Era was filled with rapidly changing social mores, a fascination with death and the occult, a desire to travel to exotic locales, and an interest in both historicism and modern technology. From over-decorated interiors to hair sculptures to poisonous wallpaper, this course takes you on a fascinating tour through the art, architecture and design of this period. Vienna’s Golden Boy: Gustav Klimt
Santa Monica College Community Education
$20
Instructor: Eleanor Schrader
Gustav Klimt embodied the aesthetic preoccupations of turn-of-the-century Vienna’s dazzling intellectual world. He was generally regarded as the greatest talent in the ranks of the Vienna avant-garde of the day. Yet far from being acknowledged as the representative artist of his age, Klimt was the target of violent criticism as his work was sometimes displayed behind a screen due to its scandalous nature.  Many of his works, especially for the Viennese Secessionists (of which he was a co-founder) displayed shimmering abstract patterns that embellished both private and public spaces.

Illustrated Manuscripts: From Devotions to Doodles
California Lutheran University, Fifty and Better
$10
Lecturer: Eleanor Schrader
(Choose to attend online via Zoom or In-Person in Oxnard)
Illuminated manuscripts are hand-written devotional books that are lavishly illuminated with gold and silver ink on top of brightly-colored images. They were produced between c. 500 and c. 1600, with monasteries as their earliest creators. Their subject matter is usually Christian scripture, prayers, and lore. Wealthy patrons also wanted these illustrative works for personal libraries and encouraged the formation of private workshops that flourished in French and Italian cities. There is also an amusing side of illustrated manuscripts found in the margins, called marginalia: murderous rabbits, menacing snails, naughty nuns. Filled with imagery depicting everything from mythical beasts to humorous depictions of contemporary issues, these delightful illustrations give us a glimpse into the imaginations of the artists who entertained their patrons with them.

Viva La Vida: the Art of Frida Kahlo
Santa Monica College Community Education
$20
Instructor: Eleanor Schrader
Frida Kahlo’s passionate interest in the cultures of Mexico served as a backdrop for her idiosyncratic and intensely autobiographical body of work. Fueled by a series of tragedies in her life, she created a series of complex and often disturbing images of herself. Yet she also created lush, fantastic imagery in her works, serving to create a powerfully complex personal style that is one of the most original and dramatic of the 20th century.

Masters of Mid-Century Modernism
California Lutheran University, Fifty and Better
$10
Lecturer: Eleanor Schrader
(Choose to attend online via Zoom or In-Person in Thousand Oaks)
From sleek new industrial materials to innovations in housing the baby boom generation, the pioneers of design in the middle of the 20th century faced new challenges in shaping a design aesthetic that would embrace the ideals of post-WWII America and Europe. Through lecture and slide illustration, this talk explores a new optimism in the relationship between design and lifestyle in the mid-20th century as manifested in open living spaces in architecture and curvaceous, biomorphic forms in furniture, lighting, and other decorative arts. The influence of the Case Study Program and the works of such design luminaries as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Joseph Eichler, Isamu Noguchi, Arne Jacobsen, and the furniture of Knoll and Herman Miller will be discussed against the backdrop of the rapid social changes of the times.

The American Flag in Art History
Eleanor Schrader

$10
In honor of July 4, join me for an online art lecture on the American flag in art history. The American flag was designed to represent the new union of the thirteen original states, having have thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field. One of the first flags had the stars arranged in a circle, based on the idea that all colonies were equal. It has flown as our national emblem in some form without interruption since 1777. We’ll look at various (respectful) images of the flag from folk art to poster art to its depiction in various events throughout American history.

Lawrence Halprin: Reconnecting the Heart of Los Angeles
Los Angeles Conservancy

$20 General Public; $15 Conservancy members and youth
Come experience famed landscape architect Lawrence Halprin’s plan to transform downtown Los Angeles through the use of open spaces.  Explore how his iconic designs are connected, and learn about how these open urban spaces foster art, community, and a connection with nature.
This tour focuses on the four Halprin designs that make up the Los Angeles Open Space Network. The Network was an ambitious plan to connect downtown Los Angeles through the use of open landscapes, and is made up of Wells Fargo Center, Bunker Hill Steps, Maguire Gardens, and Grand Hope Park.
Halprin created each landscape to be unique and each one of them impacts how Angelenos live and move about the city. The tour will follow along the network, visiting each landscape and discussing how the sites connect to the larger picture of open spaces in Los Angeles.

Old Pasadena Walking Tour – North
Pasadena Heritage

This month’s Old Pasadena Walking Tour will include the northern section of Old Pasadena, beginning at Memorial Park and walking south through several historic alleyways. This tour features the ruins of Pasadena’s second library, a historic theatre that is now readapted as condominiums, and perhaps one of the most controversial preservation stories regarding an entire block that was saved.
Old Pasadena is a shopping and dining destination, but without Pasadena Heritage, this National Register Historic District would have been destroyed! Now it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalizations in the country. One of our trained docents will lead you through the historic district and reveal its many hidden and unusual architectural details, old alleyways, and historic signs.

Lecturer: Eleanor Schrader
HyFlex (Choose to attend online via Zoom or In-Person in Thousand Oaks)
Theater architecture of the 1920s and 1930s embraced the clean and streamlined design of the Art Deco era, while also reflecting the glitz and glamour of the movie industry that evolved in Hollywood and in cities and towns across America.  Theater architecture was so grand that people nicknamed the structures “picture palaces.”  This lecture will provide a view into the stylish era of Art Deco opulence as we review the best in theatrical architectural and interior design.

Playhouse District Walking Tour – North
Pasadena Heritage

Pasadena, settled by a group of farmers from Indiana in the 1870s, originally developed along the Arroyo Seco. The Pasadena Playhouse Historic District contains approximately 34 buildings, which represent the eastward growth of the City’s urban core during the 1920s and 1930s, after Pasadena’s economy had changed from agriculture to tourism. Development of this area was spurred by the construction of Pasadena’s grand and imposing Civic Center in the 1920s, prompting the construction of residential, religious and cultural facilities in the district. This walking tour includes the Scottish Rite Temple, the United Artist Theater, the Pasadena Playhouse, the Professional Building (Pasadena’s only example of Gothic revival office building architecture) and the Bank of the West building, to name a few.

Throughout history, artists have used color to create an array of symbolism, emotions, and socio-political meanings within the context of the time period in which they created their works of art. Artists also used their knowledge of color to portray mood, light, depth, and point of view in a work of art.  We’ll discuss a variety of paintings throughout art history to understand the artists’ intention and the stories behind the paintings. And of course, as you know me so well, there are lots of wild and crazy stories to be told!

Bunny Tales: The Life and Art of Beatrix Potter
City of Calabasas Senior Center

$23 Resident, $27 Non-Resident, non-member
Lecturer: Eleanor Schrader
No children’s author has captured hearts quite like the celebrated Victorian author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. Inspired by flora and fauna found in the enchanting English countryside, Potter wrote and illustrated 28 books, including the delightful universally beloved Tale of Peter Rabbit. While most people are familiar with her well-known children’s titles, many are unaware that Potter’s earlier work included scientific studies—a practice inspired by a lifelong love of nature.

Old Pasadena Walking Tour – South
Pasadena Heritage

This month’s Old Pasadena Walking Tour will include historic Dayton Street and some of our first Black-owned businesses, the first fire station, and Friendship Pasadena Church (formerly known as Friendship Baptist Church.) It also includes Mills Place, the location of what the L.A. Times would call “The Night of Terror.” Learn the story of how the burning of a Chinese laundry in 1885 began the expulsion from Pasadena’s first commercial district of our Chinese population.
Old Pasadena has had many transformations over its many years as our first commercial center. Without Pasadena Heritage, this National Register Historic District would have been destroyed! Now it is one of the finest examples of downtown revitalizations in the country. Tours last approximately 1.5 hours with a walking distance of approximately 1 mile.
Tickets: $18 for members; $22 for non-members

At the turn of the century, reaction against the industrial age and a need for honesty and simplicity in design led the proponents of the Arts and Crafts movement to embrace a style of comfort and grace, influenced by the colors and materials of the earth. This course will trace the development of the movement from its beginnings in England to its development in America.
